Hi Darkstar,

Thanks. Noted the instructions and freezes.

Hi @darkstar,

Thanks for the vim3-focal-BOOT.tar.gz.  Based on your input that your Ubuntu Focal 5.12.0 build could have some freezes issue so I wanted to try using the Khadas_Vim3_Ubuntu_Focal_Kernel first.

Copied over all the files except these files initrd.img-5.12.0, System.map-5.12.0, uInitrd-5.12.0, uInitrd, vmlinuz-5.12.0 and zImage (all related to your kernel 5.12.0 build) from vim3-focal-BOOT over to /boot partition.  So basically using Khadas-Vim3 kernel built but with your boot.ini, uEnv.ini, etc.and the chainloader u-boot.ext from balbes150.

Login with Ubuntu-Wayland and so far no system freeze (2 hours) and Panfrost has been enabled by default.

During startup I do notice "Error on mac" and "Failed to start Advanced IEEE 802.11 AP and IEEE 802.1X/WPA/WPA2/EAP Authenticator." during boot up which I also encountered with the Debian Buster 5.10.12 build previously.  I just plug-in the Ethernet cable but it does not automatically connect to Ethernet still connected via Wifi so not sure whether Ethernet works.  Read in Khadas forum that there is bug with Gnome:
The only issue it had was ethernet was not recognized only wifi because of a bug with gnome but I quickly fixed it by adding:
“except:type:ethernet” in /usr/lib/NetworkManager/conf.d/10-globally-managed-devices.conf and then “sudo service network-manager restart” and then associating Ifupdown to eth0 from Ubuntu network-manager GUI.

Not sure whether I am having the same issue.

Not familiar with Ubuntu-Desktop (GNOME) yet  Don't seems to be able to locate the app "Startup and Session" (Xfce) to see what applications had been loaded during startup.

Edit: Tested the Ethernet Not working by default (Wired Network Unmanaged or something like that).  Will try to follow the suggested solution to see it works.

Edit2: The below method seems to resolve the Ethernet issue.  The error message "Error on mac" and "Failed to start Advanced IEEE 802.11 AP and IEEE 802.1X/WPA/WPA2/EAP Authenticator." persist during boot up.  Had one kernel panic during boot process.  No visual artifacts so far on Ubuntu-Wayland with Panfrost Enabled.

The Ubuntu login does NOT work as you pointed out. Just a blank black screen.  Did not try GNOME Classic login.

by adding:
“except:type:ethernet” in /usr/lib/NetworkManager/conf.d/10-globally-managed-devices.conf and then “sudo service network-manager restart” and then associating Ifupdown to eth0 from Ubuntu network-manager GUI.

Thank you.

FYI, at times, the Focal-5.12.0 doesn't boot up but once boot up it runs smoothly thus far.

Hi @darkstar,

I tried different combination of Khadas Vim3 image aml_autoscript, aml_autoscript.txt, aml _autoscript.txt, aml_autoscript.zip from Vim3-Focal-5.12.0 original image and your vim3-focal-BOOT-5.12.0 s905_autoscript and s905_autoscript.cmd on the Khadas Vim3 Ubuntu Focal 5.12.0 v1.0.5. Sof far it "seems" to helps in terms of boot up success (so far tried 5 times boot up consecutively successfully). Using the Khadas-Vim3 Focal 5.12.0 s905_autoscript does NOT boot up at all (stuck at Beelink Logo).

Edit: Also env.txt from khadas-vim3-focal-5.12.0 image.

Just wanted to share, if your are still using the Ubuntu-Focal-5.12.0 image on your device and see whether you have the same experience. If I copy all the files from vim3-focal-BOOT-5.12.0 to /boot, from my initial test/trial, it occasionally fail to boot i.e. kernel panic during boot up process or freeze during Login Greeting Screen after keying the password (Ubuntu-Wayland session).

Hi darkstar,

Thanks for sharing hour linux build.  Just wondering whether there is any concern if I have these error log in "syslog":

May 17 15:04:07 localhost hostapd[10338]: Configuration file: /etc/hostapd/hostapd.conf
May 17 15:04:07 localhost hostapd[10338]: Could not open configuration file '/etc/hostapd/hostapd.conf' for reading.
May 17 15:04:07 localhost hostapd[10338]: Failed to set up interface with /etc/hostapd/hostapd.conf
May 17 15:04:07 localhost hostapd[10338]: Failed to initialize interface
May 17 15:04:07 localhost systemd[1]: hostapd.service: Control process exited, code=exited, status=1/FAILURE
May 17 15:04:07 localhost systemd[1]: hostapd.service: Failed with result 'exit-code'.
May 17 15:04:07 localhost systemd[1]: Failed to start Advanced IEEE 802.11 AP and IEEE 802.1X/WPA/WPA2/EAP Authenticator.

So far I can tell wifi and Ethernet is working.  I am not sure what the error message means.

By the way I check /etc/hostapd/hostapd.conf, "hostapd.conf" does not exist in "/etc/hostapd/".  Next question is "hostapd.service" really needed for wifi connectivity?  The syslog basically fill with the above repeatedly.

Edit: 2021-06-18.  Resolved hostapd issue by disabling hostapd.
  1. sudo service hostapd stop
  2. systemctl disable hostapd
Copy the Code

Hi @darkstar,

This build runs only from USB don't waste your time to flash & boot from an SDCARD.
Yes, somehow this image does not seem to boot on SD Card.  I tried it on the Ubuntu Focal image on SD Card (have not tried your Buster image yet) and just keep getting time out and stuck.

Hi @darkstar,

Just an update on the khadas-vim3-Focal-5.12.0.  Other than the occasional freeze (kernel panic?) during boot up process (power cycle will usually boot up nicely) this image runs well.  Updated to Focal-5.12.0 v1.0.6 using apt update and apt upgrade.

Hi @darkstar,

After using the Khadas-Vim3-Focal-GNOME-5.12.0 for a while, like you mentioned at its original form it has a few issues, one not being stable in the sense that it have system freeze/kernel panic during booting process (failed to boot up) up to 50% of time on certain days but once successfully boot up is stable.  Two minor issues on Hostpad errors showing up on syslog and No Ethernet connection can be rectified and had be rectified.

Also able to resolve the fail to boot up issue (kernel panic during booting process) by replacing the linux-image-amlogic-mainline kernel (from Khadas) with another kernel from another site that I found (meveric's universal 5.13.y-arm64 kernel, currently 5.13.14-arm64).  No more booting up issue anymore. With the default Khadas buitld mesa-git-21.0.100 it work smoothly on Wayaland session (like you mentioned Xorg-Session does not work just black screen).

Your Debian 4.9-206 build is my first introduction to Linux.  Thank you for your guidance and great works.  Looking forward to your new Debian/Ubuntu builds for GT King Pro.

By the way, I would like to clone/copy a Bootable and fully functioning Linux OS on an old USB Flash (8GH USB 2.0) to a larger USB 3.0 32GB/64GB. Any guidance on how best to do it is much appreciated.  Thanks.
