Hi Darkstar,

Further information on Debian 10.  Burn new Debian 10 Buster image on SDHC again. This ...
I'm not building packages, all packages are coming from official debian repo.
I strongly suggest you to use firefox-esr with ublock addon.

Hi Darkstar,

Point taken, I was curious as to why Chromium was not able to play video in Debian Buster where Firefox in Ubuntu 20.04 LTS can.  The performance you are achieving is better than what I get in Firefox running in Ubuntu 20.04 LTS (I have around 1-10% Dropped on some of the YouTube video at 1080p/60).

I am trying to install the latest Firefox (non-ESR) version (same as preinstalled on Ubuntu 20.04 Focal LTS image)  which  currently Firefox 80.0.1.. I followed the steps as suggested by https://wiki.debian.org/Firefox.  But came out with errors. These are the steps:

1.         beelink@Beelink:~$ sudo apt install flatpak
        [sudo] password for beelink:
        Reading package lists... Done
        Building dependency tree
        Reading state information... Done
flatpak is already the newest version (1.2.5-0+deb10u1).
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
        beelink@Beelink:~$

2.          beelink@Beelink:~$ flatpak remote-add --if-not-exists flathub         https://flathub.org/repo/flathub.flatpakrepo
        beelink@Beelink:~$

3        beelink@Beelink:~$ flatpak install flathub org.mozilla.firefox
        Looking for matches…
error: Nothing matches org.mozilla.firefox in remote flathub[/b]
        beelink@Beelink:~$

The first two steps seems to goes well and successful but the step 3. "flatpak install flathub org.mozilla.firefox" seems to give "error: Nothing matches org.mozilla.firefox in remote flathub"

Any suggestion and guidance where I went wrong in the above steps to install Firefox on Debian.  Am I missing any steps?

Best Rgds

Hi JFL,

The package that you want to install is from sid branch.
If you want to install firefox 80, you should do it in normal way as below.
This will allow you to use sid ( development-testing) branch packages.
System will warn you there are updates available and if you update your whole system with sid packages yo can face some problems due to unstable packages, it is better not to update. Just install firefox and remove sid branch from /etc/apt/sources.list.

By the way it is normal to get 1-2 frame drops with 1080p/60fps because it runs on cpu usage limit %100.
1080p/30fps uses half cpu that is why I did not get any frame drops.

Edit file  " /etc/apt/sources.list " with nano and add " deb http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian sid main " without quotes and save the file.

# nano /etc/apt/sources.list
# apt update
# apt install firefox

Hi JFL,

The package that you want to install is from sid branch.

Hi Darkstar,

Thanks for the for the guides on installing Firefox 80 from the Debian Sid branch of packages. I performed the steps you have listed and Firefox 80.0.1 did install in Debian but I cannot launch it from the Application Menu or from the Application Finder.  When I click of Firefox Icon in the Application Menu, Firefox doesn't startup and in Application Finder same thing, Firefox won't startup.

Added  " deb http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian sid main " to the bottom  /etc/apt/sources.list
apt update
apt install firefox

Below is the results:
beelink@Beelink:~$ sudo apt install firefox
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:
  gcc-8-base:armhf libasan5 libc-dev-bin libcc1-0 libgcc1:armhf libitm1
  liblsan0 libtsan0 libubsan1 linux-libc-dev
Use 'sudo apt autoremove' to remove them.
Suggested packages:
  fonts-stix | otf-stix fonts-lmodern
The following NEW packages will be installed:
  firefox
0 upgraded, 1 newly installed, 0 to remove and 3 not upgraded.
Need to get 0 B/52.4 MB of archives.
After this operation, 201 MB of additional disk space will be used.
Selecting previously unselected package firefox.

Processing triggers for hicolor-icon-theme (0.17-2) ...
Processing triggers for man-db (2.8.5-2) ...

beelink@Beelink:~$
Installation was successful as far as I can tell from the above but Firefox 80.0.1-1 just won't startup when you launch it.

I have deleted the beelink@Beelink:~$ sudo apt install firefox

Is there another step or steps that I need to perform in order to be able to launch Firefox?  I can see the Firefox Icon in the Application Menu, so near yet so far.I have deleted " deb http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian sid main " from the /etc/apt/sources.list  to be safe for now.

Appreciate your guidance.

Hi Darkstar,

I also tried the followings to install Firefox 80.0.1-1 using following methods (very similar or same to your suggestions).

1.  sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list and add "deb http://deb.debian.org/debian/ unstable main contrib non-free"

(Set a low pin priority for the Debian Unstable repository so your system doesn't automatically install packages from it unless you manually specify this.)
2.  sudo nano /etc/apt/preferences.d/99pin-unstable
Paste the following in this file:
Package: *
Pin: release a=stable
Pin-Priority: 900

Package: *
Pin release a=unstable
Pin-Priority: 10

3. sudo apt update
4. sudo apt install -t unstable firefox

First try Firefox 80.0.1-1 was with errors due to dependencies and followed the steps suggested by "Debian" to rectify dependencies and it installed successfully, but the Firefox 80 just won't startup when you launch it either.

I used your method to install as root and also as in user, both same results, Firefox 80 installed but will NOT startup.

Hi Darkstar,

For the time being, I install Firefox-ESR using "sudo apt install firefox-esr" and it was successful and Firefox-ESR was able to startup. Based the Terminal Screen output is was similar or the same when I install Firefox 80 from Sid Package just that if now Firefox-ESR. Why would Firefox 80 not startup after successful installation? (Using Firefox-ESR now).
