Intel driver updates

There are several updates to the Intel drivers, including updates for the UHD graphics card, the wireless and the bluetooth controllers. However, it is advised not to upgrade them if the vendor has customized them with settings specifics to the hardware. Is this the case or can we upgrade them ourselves?
