I'm pretty sure, that your problem is not in SPMC.
Please upload at least one video that I can test

How can I make this look more like traditional Kodi?  I can't find my way around!

If I remember well there is an "appearance" menu where you can change to "confluence".

Hi,

I do know that certain builds cause problems with Kodi 16.1. When you experience Kodi crashed please switch off AMLOGIC. Really this works. Maybe with Kodi 17 this is solved. At this moment you can download Kodi 17 - beta 6 from the internet.

I'm very happy with Bee-Link GT1

And yes, maybe a new upgrade to iron the glitches away from Android 6.01 might help also...

Best regards

Hmm try this

And you should be back to how kodi looks :)

You don't know what the problem.
You don't post any video proof.
I also can say that the box is free of problems but this is wrong.
If you declare the problem - you should be ready to prove it.

I prove my statement by these videos: (Feel the difference)
Video with amlogic codec enabled
With media codec
