Hi mick,
I had the same issue, my u55 was bricked after a universal BIOS update.
However I was able to unbrick it, this is what I did:
Firstly, I opened the PC and was able to locate the BIOS chip not far from the CMOS battery. The chip was a Winbond chip W25q64jv.
Then, I contacted the support who sent me the correct firmware corresponding to the SN of my device.
In the meantime, I bought a CH341A BIOS programmer on eBay with clips (it's quite cheap ~10 bucks) and followed a tutorial to bring the flash voltage to 3.3v as the BIOS chip only supported such voltage (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ln3VIZKKaE).
And finally I unplugged the CMOS battery, flashed the BIOS chip with the correct firmware using the flashrom linux utility with the following command:- sudo flashrom -p ch341a_spi -w U55T110.BIN
I know it might seem a bit tricky if you don't have computer/electronic skills, if so ask a friend or a professional.
