Yes that is what I did, not bright enough and yes my tv is very dialed in.

This is not a real fix, since you are changing the whole video brightness.
The black scene bug is a dynamic range issue, it does not effect all pixels the same. For example, dark scenes will be the most effected by the bug, while light scenes effect would be almost not noticeable.
So, by dragging the brightness bar you are basically distorting the pictures - you are perhaps making it ok for dark scenes, but too bright for normal scenes.

So, I suggest to stick with the known workarounds of playing a video after each reboot.
