Win activation

Hello I bought a GTI 12 and it came with a 1 TB hard drive. After using it I made a backup of the HD and installed a 2 TB HD. I cloned the old HD to the new HD. The new HD boots into windows but will not activate. I put the old HD back in and it boots and is activated. I also removed the data from the old HD and installed the same backup to it and the old HD will still activate. But windows will not activate with the new 2 TB HD with same image. Why is Windows tied to the old Hard Drive ?? I would like my Windows key also, maybe that will allow activation on new HD. How do I get it and why is it tied to old HD?
