Hi, marion59,
Thanks for your response.
I've already downloaded and reinstalled Windows 11 Pro on this machine. I now need the OEM Product Key (the alphanumeric code of the form XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX) for the old Windows 11 installation to activate Windows. Manufacturers are assigned blocks of OEM Product Key for use with their OEM installations of Windows products.
Microsoft Product Keys are uniquely assigned to OEM products via some automated manufacturing method, tied to some identifier on the product (e.g., serial number, etc.). These Product Keys are automatically embedded into the OEM installation of the Windows product via some form of automation. To make this happen, a link between a specific machine and a specific Product Key is usually stored in a database somewhere. This database is accessible to the manufacturing process, but is often available to product support services, as well. For many manufacturers, product support engineers can look up a machine's unique identifier to find the associated Product Key. If this lookup isn't possible, then a new product key can be "burned" from the pool of available keys and given to the owner of the purchased hardware.
Under the terms of Microsoft's OEM Windows licensing, an installation of a Windows product requires a Product Key and that product key is uniquely assigned to the hardware purchased. The purchaser of the installed Microsoft product is entitled to that Product Key (it may not even be transferrable). In fact, it used to be that OEM manufacturers were required to provide OEM installation media (e.g., CDs or DVDs), upon request, for the OEM version of the Microsoft product installed. That's likely not the case anymore, due to the ubiquitousness of product downloads.
However, at a minimum, when a user purchases a computer with Windows installed, that user is entitled to an OEM Product Key for that Windows installation. This is mostly to ensure that Windows can be reinstalled on that machine in the event of a catastrophic disk failure that requires a reinstallation of Windows. However, it still applies in my case, since I wiped the drive and reinstalled Windows 11 Pro - that I'm entitled to a license for.
So, in short, BeeLink should be able to provide me (via email) either the original product key for my GTR-5900HX or a replacement key.
But I appreciate you taking the time to respond.
